Navalle “Chops” Turner is a world-class singer and entertainer whose powerful baritone voice and magnetic stage presence place him in the rarefied vocal company of Frank Sinatra, Billy Eckstine, Lou Rawls, and Tom Jones. With a career spanning decades, Chops has become a beloved musical institution in New Bedford, Massachusetts and beyond, captivating audiences across genres—from jazz and southern soul to modern house music.
From his earliest days attending church with his grandmother, Chops was immersed in the power of music. His grandparents’ record collection introduced him to the timeless sounds of BB King, Sinatra, and The Jackson 5, while the success of regional legends like Tavares and Jeffrey Osborne inspired him to pursue a life in music. He studied Foundation of Music at CCRI in Lincoln, RI and relentlessly sought opportunities to perform, network, and learn—whether it meant long bus rides, last-minute gigs, or studio time in Boston and Lawrence with jazz pianist and mentor Robert Green.
Over the years, Chops Turner’s voice has become a defining sound of New England soul and jazz. He has performed on some of the country’s most iconic stages, including The Apollo Theater in New York and Fenway Park, where he sang the National Anthem during a Red Sox–Yankees rivalry game. He’s shared billing with legends like The Temptations, The Manhattans, and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, and dazzled audiences with his deep emotional range, velvet tone, and larger-than-life laugh.
In 2022, Chops joined the artist roster of Poly-Groove Records, a boutique label based in Wareham, MA known for producing The GroovaLottos, Mwalim DaPhunkee Professor, and The ZYG 808. His first release under the label, “Get Together”, produced by The GroovaLottos, became a breakout southern soul hit. His current collaboration with underground house music collective WAMPTRONICA has taken his voice to new global heights with the rising international dance anthem, “GROWN FOLKS PARTY.” The track is fast becoming a favorite on house music floors around the world, with more genre-defying releases on the way.
